With <a href=\"https:\/\/bighollowguitars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Hollow<\/a>, Frost strives to build instruments that feel familiar but are different. \u201cIt\u2019s important to have something to say, and I want to make an artistic statement that is also a historical reinterpretation,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Big Hollow models are sized like the parlor guitars of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with curvier shapes and modern updates for usability and practicality. When a repeat customer, novelist Joseph Skibell, asked Frost to build a large-bodied guitar with unique inlays, the luthier rose to the challenge. The result is this Jumbo, a historical reinterpretation of Gibson\u2019s iconic Super Jumbo. \u201cI didn\u2019t exactly copy the guitar\u2019s outline,\u201d Frost explains. \u201cI put a Big Hollow Guitar flavor on the curves.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Watch Guitar Virtuoso Michael Chapdelaine Play &quot;Homage to Pat Metheny&quot; on a Big Hollow Jumbo\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HRUvYRaxuFc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that the Big Hollow Jumbo has a narrower waist and rounded shoulders compared to the classic jumbo silhouette. The body\u2019s intensely flamed maple back and sides and spruce top are finished in a natural oil varnish. For the neck, Frost used laminated construction\u2014layers of koa and Spanish cedar. At Skibell\u2019s request, the face of the guitar is ringed with blue reconstituted stone, and the back and sides are outlined with blue wooden purfling.
